BOTi Courses Overview

3-Day Business Management Essentials: A Mini-MBA-Style Short Course

MBA short courses, often called mini-MBAs, give managers and business owners a practical grounding in the core business disciplines without the time and commitment of a postgraduate degree. BOTI’s version covers three areas: marketing, finance, and organisational development and leadership. It suits new managers, specialists moving into management and people who run or plan to run a business. It is a short course with a certificate of attendance, not an MBA.

Mini-MBA vs MBA: what is the difference?

People searching for MBA training courses or a mini-MBA in South Africa usually want one of two things. Some want a degree that opens doors to senior roles. Others want a working knowledge of how a business runs, so they can manage a team, a budget or their own company with more confidence. The two needs are met by very different kinds of programme.

An MBA is a postgraduate degree

An MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a postgraduate degree in the higher education system. It involves formal admission requirements, extended study, assessments and research, and it leads to a registered qualification. It is a significant investment of time and effort, usually made with a long-term career plan in mind.

A mini-MBA is a short business management course

A mini-MBA-style course takes some of the core subjects an MBA would cover and introduces them in a compact, practical format. The aim is understanding you can use at work straight away: how marketing plans are built, how to read financial statements, how organisations change as they grow. It does not lead to a degree, it carries no credits and it is not a step towards an MBA.

BOTI’s Essentials of Business Management Course is this second kind of programme. It is designed for people who want the business basics without enrolling for a degree.

What a short business management course covers

The course is built around three subject areas. Each one is taught by a facilitator with practical experience in that field, and each is aimed at helping delegates make better decisions in their own role.

Marketing

  • Marketing as a holistic concept, not only advertising or sales
  • The marketing planning process, from understanding the market to setting objectives and actions
  • Marketing in the internet age, and how online channels change the way businesses reach customers

Finance

  • Financial statements and what they tell you about a business
  • Basic accounting principles
  • The meaning and measurement of profit
  • Budgeting
  • Working capital management

Organisational development and leadership

  • How organisations evolve as they grow, and what changes at each stage
  • An effective organisational development process
  • The challenges of change management, and what managers can do about them

Together these give a rounded picture of how a business makes money, spends it and organises its people. They are the areas where new managers most often feel out of their depth.

Who a mini-MBA-style course suits

There are no prior learning requirements, so no previous business study is needed. That makes it a sensible option for anyone looking for MBA training for beginners: a first structured look at business essentials before deciding whether longer study is worth pursuing.

New managers

Promotion into management often comes with a budget, targets and a team, but little preparation. A short business management course gives new managers the vocabulary and frameworks to take part in planning, budgeting and change discussions with senior colleagues.

Specialists moving into management

Engineers, accountants, IT professionals and other specialists are often promoted because they are good at their technical work. Managing people and resources calls for a different set of skills. The marketing and organisational development sections are especially useful for specialists who have not worked outside their own discipline before.

Business owners and future owners

Entrepreneurs and people who are interested in owning a business benefit from understanding all three areas at once. A small business owner is often the marketer, the finance manager and the person responsible for growing the team, all at the same time.

What a short course does not replace

A short business management course is honest about its limits. It does not:

  • lead to a degree or a registered qualification;
  • carry credits that count towards an MBA or any other qualification;
  • replace the depth of study, research and assessment that a postgraduate programme involves.

What it does offer is a practical introduction that delegates can apply at work immediately. For some people that is all they need. For others it confirms whether a longer programme is the right next step.

Building on the essentials

Once the foundations are in place, many delegates want more depth in one area. BOTI runs focused short courses that follow on naturally from the three subject areas.

Finance and budgeting

Managers who want to get comfortable with the numbers quickly can start with the Finance for Non-Finance Managers: Reading the Numbers Fast online masterclass. Those responsible for a departmental or business unit budget can go further with Business Unit Budgeting: Apply the Budget Function.

Leadership and people management

For the people side of management, Leadership and People Management covers the day-to-day work of managing a team, while Management and Leadership Development Training builds broader management capability. Senior managers and executives may find the Executive and Senior Management Programme a closer fit than an introductory course.

Commercial skills

Managers who deal with suppliers, customers or internal stakeholders often benefit from Key Negotiation Skills, which turns negotiation into a planned, repeatable process.

You can see the full range of management programmes on BOTI’s Leadership and Management courses page.

Choosing between a mini-MBA and an MBA

A few questions can help you decide which route suits you or your team:

  1. Do you need a formal qualification for a specific role or career move? If so, a degree programme is the route to explore.
  2. Do you need practical business knowledge for the job you have now? A short course is a quicker and more focused way to get it.
  3. Are you unsure whether business study suits you? A short course is a low-commitment way to find out.
  4. Are you training a group of managers at once? An in-house short course can be arranged around your organisation’s schedule and examples.

This course is not accredited. It is delivered as a professional skills programme, and delegates receive a BOTI certificate of attendance.
