BOTI business training for your employees and leadership programmes – take your business to a whole new level with the 5 step process to developing effective staff training programmes

Courses ranging from short management courses through to management training and development and various leadership programmes will guide and inspire you.

The value and benefits of building effective training programmes and leadership programmes to upskill your organisation’s workforce cannot be overemphasised.  Effective training programmes lead to greater efficiency and higher levels of productivity, which, in turn, lead to a happier, more productive workforce that generates increased profits and a healthier business.  BOTI will show you how to do just that.  Courses ranging from short management courses through to management training and development and various leadership training programmes will guide and inspire you.

An effective training programme is developed using a systematic, 5 step process.

Step 1

Identify and assess appropriate training needs

The first step to developing an effective training programme when it comes to leadership programmes involves being able to identify and assess appropriate training needs.  In so doing, a training needs assessment should be performed, which involves a clear, four-step process.

  1. Identify a clear business goal that the training will address
  2. Determine the tasks that staff will need to perform in order to reach that goal
  3. Decide on appropriate training activities that will assist staff in learning to perform the relevant tasks.
  4. Define the learning characteristics of the staff that will ensure effective training

Step 2

Perform a training needs assessment and use a gap analysis to set training objectives

The training needs assessment will help identify any performance gaps in the current training initiatives and employee skill sets.  Conduct a gap analysis that will be used to inform and provide the basis of the training objectives.   The ultimate goal should be to bridge the gap between current and desired performance levels through the development of appropriate training programmes.  With BOTI’s short management courses, management training and development programmes and various leadership programmes understanding how to develop effective training programmes tailored to your business needs becomes that much easier.

Step 3

Formulate training action plans

The next step involves formulating dedicated action plans that include learning theories, instructional design, content, learning materials and other relevant training elements.  Resources and training delivery methods should also be included.  In developing the programme, the level of training and learning styles of the participants involved in the programme need to be taken into account.

Step 4

Implement training plans and initiatives

During this phase, the training programme is brought to life.  At this point, determine whether the training will be conducted in-house or outsourced to an external supplier.  Training programme implementation involves scheduling training activities and the procurement of related resources such as facilities and equipment.  This will officially launch the training programme.  During the training process participant progress should be monitored to ensure programme effectiveness.

Step 5

Evaluate and revise where necessary

As mentioned in Step 4, training initiatives should be closely monitored and evaluated based on whether they meet defined objectives.  Feedback should be obtained from all stakeholders and evaluated with respect to overall training programme effectiveness, instructor competency and knowledge and participant knowledge and skills gained over the duration of the training programme.   At this stage, the training programme or training action plans can be revised if it is found that the desired objectives or expectations are not being met.

Adult learners display certain characteristics that need to be borne in mind when developing appropriate training initiatives and in essence:

  • Are self-directed
  • Approach training with set opinions and a lifetime of existing knowledge and experience
  • Are goal-orientated
  • Prefer training that is task orientated
  • Effectively learn when they understand ‘what’s in it for them’.
