    Personal Branding Course: Introduction

Branding includes how you see yourself and how others see you, thus it is important to clearly identify your image or your brand.

    Personal Branding Course :Course Outline

Perception is subjective and branding includes how you see yourself and how others see you, thus it is important to clearly identify your image or your brand. You can avoid actively cultivating your image, however the truth is that people will have a perception of you whether you develop your brand or not. Since other people are going to think what they want – it makes logical sense to nudge them into view of the brand you want to display. Taking control of personal branding is important when maintaining your public reputation. The buzz word in branding or image promotion these days is ‘authenticity’, people are attracted to people who are real and living authentic lives, people who are consistent and transparent. This reflects in the public brand you cultivate. In order to define yourself, you must know yourself. Identify your core values, passions and strengths, these passions, values and strengths need to define your brand. By describing yourself, you allow others to see you clearly. Pillars represent your main values in branding. This is what you stand for and what your core values are.TIP: THE THREE C’S When you establish your brand, remember the three C’s -Clarity – your brand needs to be clear about what you represent. Your reputation is at stake if there are misunderstandings in your brand. You cannot support Greenpeace and whaling at the same time. Consistency – your values and actions need to remain consistent. Constancy – your core values and your strengths should never change, these are dependable aspects of branding. Once you define your brand, commit to it. It is important to understand how your personal brand and your professional brand reflect each other. Your behaviour at public events for instance needs to reflect both brands – personal and professional. There are many tools available to sharpen your brand, when used efficiently you have the opportunity to strengthen your brand and its influence on others. Social media is the most powerful tool in your toolbox to promote your brand. On social media – content is king – if your message is clear and well written, people will read it – if not they won’t. Be careful what you say on social media because once it’s said, it’s out there and you can recant, but the damage will already be done. Networking is a necessary aspect of any brand, getting out there and connecting with likeminded people will develop your brand. Whether we like it or not, first impressions and first appearances count, and appearance is an important part of any brand. The way you dress will affect the way people perceive you and your brand.
