Course outline

Upon successful completion of this Unit Standard course you will be able to:

• evaluate the effects of content, language and style on readers’ responses in specific texts
• analyse and criticise texts produced for a range of purposes, audiences and contexts
• identify and explain the values, attitudes and assumptions in texts
• use analytical skills to make informed judgements about complex human and social issues where both the functions of language and its drama and power are concerned
• draw comparisons between texts and compare and contrast themes and issues in texts with those within the context of everyday life and the workplace
• Identify and analyse style and tone and account for their effectiveness within different texts
• Challenge the assumptions and values expressed within different texts
• Become a critical reader of both the written and visual mass media
• Use verbal/oral communication skills to make an effective presentation
• Use non-verbal skills to effectively reach an audience
• Maintain good poise during a presentation
