Course outline
Upon successful completion of this Unit Standard course you will be able to:
- evaluate the effects of content, language and style on readers’ responses in specific texts
- analyse and criticise texts produced for a range of purposes, audiences and contexts
- identify and explain the values, attitudes and assumptions in texts
- use analytical skills to make informed judgements about complex human and social issues where both the functions of language and its drama and power are concerned
- draw comparisons between texts and compare and contrast themes and issues in texts with those within the context of everyday life and the workplace
- Identify and analyse style and tone and account for their effectiveness within different texts
- Challenge the assumptions and values expressed within different texts
- Become a critical reader of both the written and visual mass media
- Use verbal/oral communication skills to make an effective presentation
- Use non-verbal skills to effectively reach an audience
- Maintain good poise during a presentation
