    Team Building For Managers Course

    Course Outline

Many years ago, teambuilding was a new concept, there was a production line that evolved into a team and companies started realising that when people work in groups, their morale was better, they were more effective and got more job satisfaction. The effect of this was that employees had greater company loyalty and the employee turnover decreased, thereby creating a substantial financial gain for companies.

The buzzword back then was teambuilding. Many people knew the term, but did not know what teambuilding entails. If you were sent on a team-building weekend, you were in an innovative company, and had a promising future. Still, the actual team-building weekend didn’t amount to much more than a couple of game drives, a couple of lectures and an open bar. Times have changed however and team building is a profession of its own. No longer do we circle the water hole until the animals come to drink, we have a planned weekend ahead of us, filled with games and activities all of which have at their core – teambuilding.

There is a plethora of books on the market about team building, and games and activities to employ while team-building. Participants in the workshop will learn many varieties of games and activities for various results such as communication, motivation or problem-solving. In this newsletter we name only a few. Studies show that fostering a sense of play is a good way to foster camaraderie and teamwork. Using games also gives people a sense of fun and depending on the game a sense of friendly competition. Games for introductions are called ice-breakers, they are normally used in teambuilding at the beginning of the session. Ice-breakers help people to get to know others not only by their names but also by their interests or their experiences. Games that build camaraderie are played on the basis that everyone is participating as equals. Games that work best are games such as scavenger hunts, puzzles and timed challenges, these are all games that require a team effort. Games that centre on problem solving are fantastic tools for team building. Games that build trust are useful in helping your team build confidence in each other and themselves.

A good game to play is Minefield where the mines are paper cups and one person is led blindfolded through the maze by another person’s directions. The other half of teambuilding is made up of activities, some of the most popular activities are games like graffiti, where team members add words to poster boards around the room. Activities can serve as a good motivation and are an excellent tool for improving co-operation and collaboration. We suggest reading Bordessa, Kris (2005) Team Challenges: 170+ Group Activities to Build Cooperation, Communication, and Creativity.TIP: Social gatherings are another way to build your team, suggested events are karaoke nights or potluck dinners or a physical event such as 94.7’s Cycle challenge.
