IF THERE’S AN ITCH YOU MUST SCRATCH – PLEASE DO IT THE RIGHT WAY

“The capacity for getting along with our neighbour, depends to a large extent on the capacity for getting along with ourselves. The self-respecting individual will try to be as tolerant of his neighbour’s shortcomings as he is of his own.” Eric Hoffer

This workshop (Constructive Criticism Training Course) is geared towards managers and leaders and potential managers and leaders (although anyone is welcome to reserve a seat for this workshop) and ties in with a few of our other workshops. More information on these workshops may be obtained here: course schedules.

The Constructive Criticism Training Course will begin with deciding the best times for delivering constructive criticism, such as after the bad behaviour has been repeated, or when there is a breach in the company’s policy. Our workshop is tailored to the group, so together we might find other times and situations more suitable.

We discuss planning next, gathering information and creating an action plan. Then we will choose the time and place. What cannot be negated is that one criticizes in private and praises in public. We move on to during the session with the employee and teach participants to remember to watch their own and the employee’s body language. Other actions included in the module are checking for understanding, asking for feedback, setting goals and being collaborative. We go into detail in goal setting and meet up with our old friend the SMART method.

TIP: The 3 P’s is also a very effect method to set goals. The 3 P’s are Purpose, Planning and Partnering.

Sometimes constructive criticism as set-out in the The Constructive Criticism Training Course one can be met with anger or negative emotions, thus the next module is devoted to diffusing anger and negative emotions. The right words said at the right time can help enormously. We teach participants to stay on the subject, have empathy with their fellow employee and we teach students to avoid ‘you’ messages. We also teach students what not to do, such as verbally attacking the employee or not giving them a chance to speak. We also teach you not to talk down to the employee and how to keep emotions out of the discussion.

Now that we have made an action plan with the employee, we will teach you how and when to follow it up. The instructions in the action plan should be very specific and within the employee’s range of success so that when you set up a follow up meeting, and be sure to make yourself available for that, you can give praise on areas of improvement before working on solutions in the action plan that are not working. We wrap up our workshop with focusing on the future and measuring results.
